Author: John Bowring Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 866 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Watchman, tell us of the night, What its signs of promise are: Traveler, o'er yon mountain's height, See that glory-beaming star! Watchman, doth its beauteous ray Aught of joy or hope foretell? Traveler, yes; it brings the day, Promised day of Israel. 2 Watchman, tell us of the night; Higher yet that star ascends: Traveler, blessedness and light, Peace and truth, its course portends. Watchman, will its beams alone Gild the spot that gave them birth? Traveler, ages are its own, And it bursts o'er all the earth! 3 Watchman, tell us of the night; For the morning seems to dawn: Traveler, darkness takes its flight; Doubt and terror are withdrawn. Great and Fair Is She

Author: William Watson Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 21 hymnals First Line: Great and fair is she, our land Lyrics: 1. Great and fair is she, our land, High of heart and strong of hand; Dawn is on her forehead still, In her veins youth’s arrowy thrill. Hers are riches, might and fame; All the earth resounds her name; In her roadsteads navies ride: Hath she need of aught beside? 2. Power Unseen, before whose eyes Nations fall and nations rise, Grant she climb not to her goal All-forgetful of the Soul! Firm in honor be she found, Justice-armed and mercy-crowned, Blest in labor, blest in ease, Blest in noiseless charities. 3. Unenslaved by things that must Yield full soon to moth and rust, Let her hold a light on high Men unborn may travel by. Mightier still she then shall stand, Molded by Thy secret hand, Power Eternal, at whose call Nations rise and nations fall. Used With Tune: ST. GEORGE'S WINDSOR Text Sources: The Muse in Exile (New York: John Lane Company, 1913)

Lord, Our Lord, Thy Glorious Name

Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 37 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Lord, our Lord, thy glorious name all thy wondrous works proclaim; in the heav'ns with radiant signs evermore thy glory shines. Infant lips thou dost ordain wrath and vengeance to restrain; weakest means fulfil thy will, mighty enemies to still. 2 Moon and stars in shining height nightly tell their Maker's might; when thy wondrous heav'ns I scan, then I know how weak is man. What is man that he should be loved and visited by thee, raised to an exalted height, crowned with honor in thy sight? 3 With dominion crowned he stands o'er the creatures of thy hands; all to him subjection yield in the sea and air and field. Lord, our Lord, thy glorious name all thy wondrous works proclaim; thine the name of matchless worth, excellent in all the earth. Topics: God's Work Creation; God Name of; Man Dignity of Scripture: Psalm 8 Used With Tune: THANKSGIVING (GILBERT) Text Sources: The Psalter, 1912

Christ, of All My Hopes the Ground

Author: Ralph Wardlaw Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 173 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Christ, of all my hopes the ground, Christ, the spring of all my joy, still in you may I be found, still for you my pow'rs employ, still for you my pow'rs employ. 2 Let your love my heart inflame; keep your fear before my sight; be your praise my highest aim; be your smile my chief delight, be your smile my chief delight. 3 Fountain of o'erflowing grace, freely from your fullness give; till I close my earthly race, may I prove it "Christ to live," may I prove it "Christ to live." 4 Firmly trusting in your blood, nothing shall my heart confound; safely I shall pass the flood, safely reach Immanuel's ground, safely reach Immanuel's ground. 5 Thus, O thus, an entrance give to the land of cloudless sky; having known it "Christ to live," let me know it "gain to die," let me know it "gain to die." Hasten, Lord, the Glorious Time

Author: Harriet Auber Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 299 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Hasten, Lord, the glorious time When, beneath Messiah’s sway, Every nation, every clime, Shall the Gospel call obey. Mightiest kings His power shall own, Heathen tribes His name adore; Satan and his host o’erthrown, Bound in chains, shall hurt no more. 2. As when soft and gentle showers Fall upon the thirsty plain, Springing grass and blooming flowers, Clothe the wilderness again; So Thy Spirit shall descend, Softening every stony heart, And its sweetest influence lend, All that’s lovely to impart. 3. Then shall wars and tumults cease, Then be banished grief and pain, Righteousness and joy and peace, Undisturbed shall ever reign. Bless we, then, our gracious Lord, Ever praise His glorious hame; All His mighty acts record; All His wondrous love proclaim. This hymn was originally written in 4-line verses. With a tune of a different meter, the omitted verse 6 can be used, as well: Time shall sun and moon obscure, Seas be dried, and rocks be riv’n. But His reign shall still endure, Endless as the days of Heav’n. Used With Tune: ELTHAM Text Sources: Spirit of the Psalms, 1829
