1816 - 1868 Person Name: Carl Olof Rosenius Topics: Testing Times Author of "With God and his mercy, His Spirit and Word" in Christian Youth Hymnal Rosenius, Carl Olof. (Nysätra, Sweden, February 3, 1816--February 24, 1868). Lutheran. Son of a state church preacher with pietist convictions. University of Uppsala, 1838-1839. Tutor at Lenna. Lay preacher and evangelist. Editor of Pietisten, 1842-1868, a monthly which played a major role in the revival and free church movement. In order to stem the tide of separation and keep the revival within the state church, Rosenius and his friends organized "Evangeliska Fosterlandsstiftelsen" (Evangelical National Foundation) in 1856. In his activities as a lay preacher Rosenius was often accompanied by the singer-hymnist, Oscar Ahnfelt, and his lyrics were published in the latter's Andeliga Sånger (Spiritual Songs). Author of "Var jag går" (Wheresoe'er I Roam) and "Med Gud och hans vänskap" (With God and His Friendship). 1831 - 1911 Person Name: John Samuel Jones Topics: Testing Times Author of "I Was Made a Christian" in Christian Youth Hymnal Born: March 2, 1831, London, England. Died: 1911, London, England. Jones, John Samuel, b. in London in 1831 and ordained in Ireland in 1858. He has held several benefices, including St. Philip, Clerk en well; Christ Church, Liverpool; and Knight's Enham, Hants. His hymns include:— 1. I was made a Christian. [For the young.] Written about 1880 for use at Enham Sunday School, and published in The Children's Hymn Book, 1881, and subsequently in the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern. 2. Now the busy week is done. [Saturday Evening.] This hymn is attributed on p. 1582, ii.. to the Rev. S. J. Jones, Rector of Batsford, in error. It was contributed to the 1889 Suppl. Hymns to Hymns Ancient & Modern. Mr. Jones's latest work is A Christian Week: And other Verse, 1906. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)
