The word, O God, Like Dew Restoreth

Author: E. Boye; C. B. Garve Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home #146 (1927) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 First Line: Thy Word, O God, like dew, restoreth Lyrics: 1 Thy Word, O God, like dew, restoreth My fainting soul to strength and peace, And, as a balm, from heaven poureth And gives my heart from pain surcease; Oh, make this field of Jesus bear The fruit of faith through Thy sweet care. 2 Thy Word, O God, like sword and arrow Cuts through the sinful world's disguise And piercing even bone and marrow, Lays bare the heart before Thine eyes; Let men before its power fall And unto Thee for mercy call. 3 Thy Word is like the star of glory That led the wise men on their way; It tells the world the wondrous story Of Him who is our Hope and Stay; Let all behold this glorious star And reach their home from lands afar. If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee

Author: Georg Neumark; Catherine Winkworth Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #151 (1985) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 If thou but trust in God to guide thee and hope in him through all thy ways, he'll give thee strength, whate'er betide thee, and bear thee through the evil days; who trusts in God's unchanging love builds on the rock that nought can move. 2 Only be still, and wait his leisure in cheerful hope, with heart content to take whate'er thy Father's pleasure and all-discerning love hath sent; nor doubt our inmost wants are known to him who chose us for his own. 3 Sing, pray, and keep his ways unswerving, so do thine own part faithfully, and trust his Word; though undeserving. Thou yet shalt find it true for thee. God never yet forsook at need the soul that trusted him indeed. Topics: Pilgrimage and Conflict Scripture: Psalm 46:1 Languages: English Tune Title: NEUMARK

Wise Men, They Came to Look for Wisdom

Author: Christopher Idle (1938-) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #161 (1998) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Wise men, they came to look for wisdom, finding one wiser than they knew; rich men, they met with one yet richer -- King of the kings, they knelt to you: Jesus, our wisdom from above, wealth and redemption, life and love. 2 Pilgrims they were, from unknown countries, searching for one who knows the world; lost are their names and strange their journeys, famed is their zeal to find the child: Jesus, in you the lost are claimed, aliens are found and known and named. 3 Magi, they stooped to see your splendour, led by a star to light supreme; promised Messiah, Lord eternal, glory and peace are in your name. Joy of each day, our song by night, shine on our path your holy light. 4 Guests of their God, they opened treasures -- incense and gold and solemn myrrh; welcoming one too young to question how came these gifts, and what they were. Gift beyond price of gold or gem, make among us your Bethlehem. Topics: Epiphany (feast); Christmas Scripture: Matthew 2:1-12 Languages: English Tune Title: WER NUR DEN LIEBEN GOTT

By Sin Weighed Down, And Sorely Stricken

Author: Christoph Titius Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home #163 (1927) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 First Line: By sin weigh'd down, and sorely stricken Lyrics: 1 By sin weigh'd down, and sorely stricken, I stand before God's judgment throne. O God, do Thou my spirit quicken, For Thou canst help, and Thou alone. Have mercy on my soul, I pray, And wash Thou all my guilt away. 2 O Father, Thou of mercies tender, Thy humble child doth cry to Thee; Wilt Thou to me sweet comfort render, That I again may joyful be? Have mercy on my soul, I pray, And wash Thou all my guilt away. 3 My troubled soul is deeply ailing, It cannot for itself atone; But let Thy mercy be unfailing, That I Thy healing grace may own. Have mercy on my soul, I pray, And wash Thou all my guilt away. 4 My soul Thy pardon strongly craveth; Oh, speak the word I long to hear: "I lend thee grace that truly saveth, I pardon thee, I stay thy fear." Have mercy on my soul, I pray, And wash Thou all my guilt away. 5 I do not doubt my pray'r is granted. The sense of comfort doth increase; I have the grace for which I panted, And so to raise this cry I cease: Have mercy on my soul, I pray, And wash Thou all my guilt away. Help us, O Lord! behold, we enter

Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-book #171 (1918) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Help us, O Lord! behold we enter Upon another year today; In Thee our hopes and thoughts now center, Renew our courage for the way: New Life, new strength, new happiness We ask of Thee, O hear and bless! 2 May every plan and undertaking This year be all begun with Thee; When I am sleeping or am waking. Still let me know Thou art with me; Abroad do Thou my footsteps guide. At home be ever at my side. 3 Be this a time of grace and pardon; Thy rod I take with willing mind, But suffer naught my heart to harden; O let me now Thy mercy find; In Thee alone, my God, I live, Thou only canst my sins forgive. 4 And may this year to me be holy; Thy grace so fill my every thought That all my life be pure and lowly And truthful as a Christian’s ought; So make me, while yet dwelling here, Pious and blest from year to year. 5 And grant, Lord, when the year is over, That it for me in peace may close; In all things care for me, and cover My head in time of fear and woes; So may I, when my years are gone, Appear with joy before Thy throne. Baptized into Thy name most holy

Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-book #177 (1893) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 BAPTISED into Thy name most holy, O Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, I claim a place, though weak and lowly, Among Thy seed, Thy chosen host; Buried with Christ, and dead to sin, Thy Spirit now shall live within. 2 My loving Father, Thou dost take me To be henceforth Thy child and heir; My faithful Saviour, Thou dost make me The fruit of all Thy sorrows share, Thou, Holy Ghost, wilt comfort me, When darkest clouds around I see. 3 And I have vowed to fear and love Thee, And to obey Thee, Lord, alone; I felt Thy Holy Spirit move me, And freely pledged myself Thine own, Renouncing sin to keep the faith, And war with evil unto death. 4 My faithful God, Thou failest never, Thy covenant surely will abide; O cast me not away forever, Should I transgress it on my side; If I have sore my soul defiled, Yet still forgive, restore Thy child. 5 Yea, all I am, and love most dearly,-- to Thee I offer new the whole; O let me make my vows sincerely, Take full possession of my soul, Let naught within me, naught I own, Serve any will but Thine alone. 6 Depart, depart! Thou Prince of darkness! No more by thee I'll be enticed. Mine is indeed a tarnished conscience, But sprinkled with the blood of Christ. Away, vain world! O sin, away! Lo! I renounce you all this day. 7 And never let my purpose falter, O Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, But keep me faithful to Thine altar, Till Thou shalt call me from my post; So unto Thee I live and die, And praise Thee evermore on high. O Would, My God, That I Could Praise Thee

Author: Johann Mentzer; Miss Catherine Winkworth Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #178 (1926) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 O would, my God, that I could praise Thee With thousand tongues by day and night! How many a song my lips should raise Thee, Who order'st all things here aright! My thankful heart would ever be Telling what God hath done for me. 2 O all ye powers that He implanted, Arise, keep silence thus no more; Put forth the strength that He hath granted, Your noblest work is to adore; O soul and body, make ye meet With heartfelt praise your Lord to greet. 3 O Father, deign Thou, I beseech Thee, To listen to my earthly lays; A nobler strain in heaven shall reach Thee, When I with angels hymn Thy praise, And learn amid their choirs to sing Loud hallelujahs to my King. Amen. Topics: Church Year Trinity Season; Trinity, Twelfth Sunday; Spiritual Dumbness; Praise Languages: English Tune Title: WER WEISS, WIE NAHE MIR MEIN ENDE
