Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken

Author: John Newton Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,287 hymnals Scripture: Galatians 6:14 First Line: Glorious things of thee are spoken Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God. He, whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may'st smile at all thy foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace, which like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus deriving from their banner light by night and shade by day, safe they feed upon the manna which God gives them on their way. 4 Savior, since of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in your name. Fading are the world's best pleasures, all its boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasures none but Zion's children know. Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves, We shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves. 2 Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows, Fearing neither clouds nor winter's chilling breeze; By and by the harvest and the labor ended - We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves. The day of march has come; henceforth in fields of conquest your tents shall be our home. Make friends of God's children; help those who are weak, forgetting in nothing his blessing to seek. 2 Take time to be holy; the world rushes on; spend much time in secret with Jesus alone. By looking to Jesus, like him thou shalt be; thy friends in thy conduct his likeness shall see. 3 Take time to be holy; let him be thy guide, and run not before him, whatever betide. In joy or in sorrow, still follow thy Lord, and, looking to Jesus, still trust in his word. 4 Take time to be holy; be calm in thy soul; each thought and each motive beneath his control. Thus led by his Spirit to fountains of love, thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.
