O Day of Rest and Gladness

Author: Christopher Wordsworth Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 827 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O day of rest and gladness, O day of joy and light, O balm of cure and sadness, Most beautiful, most bright, On thee the high and lowly Before th'eternal throne Sing "Holy, holy, holy," To the great Three in One. 2 On thee at the Creation The light first had its birth; On thee for our salvation Christ rose from depths of earth; On thee our Lord victorious The Spirit sent from heav'n, And thus, on thee, most glorious, A three-fold light was giv'n. 3. Thou art a cooling fountain In life's dry, dreary sand; From thee, like Nebo's mountain, We view our Promised Land; A day of sweet reflection, A day of holy love, A day of resurrection From earth to things above. 4 Today on weary nations The heavenly manna falls; To holy convocations The silver trumpet calls, Where Gospel-light is glowing With pure and radiant beams And living water flowing With soul-refreshing streams. 5 New graces ever gaining From this our day of rest, We reach the rest remaining To spirits of the blest. To Holy Ghost be praises, To Father, and to Son; The Church her voice upraises To Thee, blest Three in One. Amen. Topics: Adoration Lord's Day Scripture: Psalm 118:24 Used With Tune: ELLACOMBE

When Mary Poured a Rich Perfume

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 4 hymnals First Line: When Mary poured a rich perfume ;on Jesus' weary feet Lyrics: When Mary poured a rich perfume on Jesus’ weary feet, Her caring filled that humble room; the fragrance there was sweet. But full of anger, Judas said, “We could have used this more! Why was her gift not sold instead, and given to the poor?” The Lord replied, “Leave her alone! She bought it for this day. This caring love that she has shown is faithful to God’s way. The poor will always be with you, but you will not have me.” He blessed her and he thanked her, too, for giving lavishly. O Christ, what can your people bring to show you thanks and love? You need no fragrant offering; for now you reign above. Since there will never cease to be the poor throughout the land, May we, your church, serve faithfully by offering them our hand. The Roseate Hues of Early Dawn

Author: Cecil F. Alexander Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 140 hymnals Lyrics: 1. The roseate hues of early dawn, the brightness of the day, The crimson of the sunset sky, how fast they fade away! O for the pearly gates of Heav’n! O for the golden floor! O for the sun of righteousness that setteth nevermore! 2. The highest hopes we cherish here, how fast they tire and faint! How many a spot defiles the robe that wraps an earthly saint! O for a heart that never sins! O for a soul washed white! O for a voice to praise our king, nor weary day or night! 3. Here faith is ours, and heavenly hopes, and grace to lead us higher; But there are perfectness and peace beyond our best desire. O by Thy love and anguish, Lord, O by Thy life laid down, Grant that we fall not from Thy grace, nor cast away our crown! Used With Tune: ELLACOMBE

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 37 hymnals First Line: Ye sons of pride, that hate the just Lyrics: 1. Ye sons of pride, that hate the just And trample on the poor, When death has brought you down to dust, Your pomp shall rise no more. 2. The last great day shall change the scene; When will that hour appear? When shall the just revive and reign O’er all that scorned them here? 3. God will my naked soul receive When separate from the flesh; And break the prison of the grave, To raise my bones afresh. 4. Heaven is my everlasting home, The inheritance is sure: Let men of pride their rage resume, But I’ll repine no more. Used With Tune: ELLACOMBE Text Sources: The Psalms of David, 1719

Thou Art the Mighty King of Kings

Author: Joseph Proud Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 5 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Thou art the mighty King of kings, The Lord of lords most high: Israel is safe beneath Thy wings; Thy servant shall not die. Through Thee we shall the victory gain, Though hosts of hell oppose: Thou art our God; and Thou wilt reign, And conquer all our foes. 2. We trust not in our bow or sword; For weakness is our pow’r: In Thee we trust, Almighty Lord, Through every dangerous hour, To Thee we look, Thou God of love, Thy holy name adore: Oh, may we rise to Heav’n above, To love and praise Thee more.
