William Henry Harris

1883 - 1973 Person Name: W. H. Harris Scripture: Psalm 31:15 Composer of "ALBERTA" in Rejoice in the Lord Sir William Henry Harris KCVO (28 March 1883 - 6 September 1973) was an English organist and composer, affectionately nicknamed 'Doc H' by his choristers. Harris was born in Fulham, London and died in Petersfield. He was a chorister of Holy Trinity, Tulse Hill. At the age of 14, he took up a "flexible" position as Assistant Organist at St David's Cathedral in Wales, followed at 16 by a scholarship to the Royal College of Music where he was Professor of Organ and Harmony from 1921 to 1955. He was organist at St Augustine's Church, Edgbaston from 1911 to 1919 and concurrently of Assistant Organist at Lichfield Cathedral followed in 1919 by becoming Organist successively at New College and in 1929 Christ Church, Oxford, moving to St. George's Chapel, Windsor in 1933. As Organist at Windsor, Harris was at his most productive. He produced music for the Three Choirs Festival, was a conductor at both the 1937 and 1953 coronations, and had music premiered at the Proms, all of which led to being appointed KCVO in 1954. Harris is best remembered for his Anglican church music, though his main achievements were as a choir-trainer. His most famous works are the anthems "Faire is the heaven" (1925) and to a lesser extent "Bring us, O Lord God" (1959), both for unaccompanied double choir, and "Strengthen ye the weak hands" (1949) for choir and organ. His very accessible Communion Service in F was frequently sung in a great many Anglican parish churches up until the 1970s. The canticles Harris in A and Harris in A minor are still sung at Evensong in a number of Anglican cathedrals. Jacques Berthier

1923 - 1994 Person Name: Jacques Berthier, 1923-94 Scripture: Psalm 31:12 Composer of "HEAR MY PRAYER" in Lutheran Service Book Jacques Berthier (b. Auxerre, Burgundy, June 27, 1923; d. June 27, 1994) A son of musical parents, Berthier studied music at the Ecole Cesar Franck in Paris. From 1961 until his death he served as organist at St. Ignace Church, Paris. Although his published works include numerous compositions for organ, voice, and instruments, Berthier is best known as the composer of service music for the Taizé community near Cluny, Burgundy. Influenced by the French liturgist and church musician Joseph Gelineau, Berthier began writing songs for equal voices in 1955 for the services of the then nascent community of twenty brothers at Taizé. As the Taizé community grew, Berthier continued to compose most of the mini-hymns, canons, and various associated instrumental arrangements, which are now universally known as the Taizé repertoire. Doris Akers

1923 - 1995 Person Name: Doris M. Akers Scripture: Psalm 31 Author of "Lead Me, Guide Me" in Moravian Book of Worship Doris Mae Akers USA 1923-1995. Born at Brookfield, MO, one of nine siblings, her (inter-racial) parents divorced when she was age three. She then lived with her mother, who remarried when she was age six. They lived in Kirksville, MO. Some of her brothers lived with her father after the divorce. The family attended the Bethel AME Church in Kirksville, where she learned to play piano by ear at age six. She wrote her first song at age 10. In the 1930s she formed a singing gospel group with siblings, Edward, Marian, and Donald, who went by the name ‘Dot and the Swingsters’. Early in her career (1938) she moved to Los Angeles, CA. There she became known for her work with the ‘Sky Pilot Choir’, an integrated group that made recordings and appeared on Radio and TV across the country. Her fresh, modern arrangements of traditional negro spirituals drew large crowds from far and near, and increased her church’s attendance dramatically. Her choir group released three record albums. She recorded solos in 1963 and also collaborated with the Statemen Quartet in 1964. She ended working with the choir in 1965, but reunited with it again in 1974 to make a 4th recording for RCA Victor. In 1970 she moved to Columbus, OH, where she continued composing, recording, and traveling. In the 1980s she released a new gospel album each year on a regional Midwest label. She also released a few albums in Canada (not distributed in the U S). In the 1990s she began recording for the Gaither label and appeared in some of their TV productions and concerts. She was affectionately known as ‘Miss Gospel Music’, respected and admired by everyone in the gospel music business. By this time, she had mastered vocalization, keyboards, choir directing, arranging, composing, and publishing. She worked with many of the early pioneers in gospel music and authored gospel compositions, some selling millions of records for other performers and evangelists. In her final years she was Minister of Music at Grace Temple Deliverance Center, Minneapolis, MN. In 1994 she broke her ankle, and also discovered she had spinal cancer. She died at Edina, MN. She never married. She wrote 500+ songs. She received many awards over the years, including ‘Gospel Music Composer of the Year’ (for both years 1960 and 1961). In 1976, the city of Kirksville, MO, held “Doris Akers’ Day’, featuring her as the headline act, as part of the bicentennial celebration. Over 20,000 attended the celebration there. In 1992 she was honored by the Smithsonian Institution as ‘The Foremost Gospel Writer in the U S’. Her works include eight collections of music. In 2001 she was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. In 2011 she was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame. John Perry

Richard Smallwood

Washington, D.C., 1948), a composer, arranger, pianist, and innovator in the African American gospel style. Many of his arrangements of gospel hymns appear in Lift Every Voice and Sing (1981). Organized by Smallwood in 1967, the Richard Smallwood Singers have sung and recorded many of his arrangements. He remains their current director. At age of 11 he went to work in a Pro­test­ant print shop in Mex­i­co Ci­ty and helped pro­duce El Evan­gel­is­ta Mex­i­ca­no (The Mex­i­can Evan­gel­ist) for the Meth­od­ist Church of the South; he rose to be­come its di­rect­or for 17 years. Look­ing to im­prove him­self, Men­do­za en­tered a night school for work­ers, but lat­er feel­ing the call to preach the Gos­pel, he en­tered the Pres­by­ter­i­an Sem­in­a­ry in Mex­i­co Ci­ty. When the sem­in­a­ry closed temp­o­rar­i­ly, Men­do­za en­tered the Meth­od­ist In­sti­tute of Pueb­la, where he fin­ished the course in the­ol­o­gy. In 1898 he be­came a mem­ber of the An­nu­al Con­fer­ence of the Mex­i­can Meth­od­ist Church. From 1915 to 1917, he be­longed to the South­ern Meth­od­ist Con­fer­ence of Cal­i­for­nia. Louisa M. R. Stead

1850 - 1917 Person Name: Louisa M. R. Stead (1871-1917) Scripture: Psalm 31:14 Author of "¡Oh, cuán dulce es fiar en Cristo!" in Himnario Adventista del Séptimo Día Louisa (Louise) Maria Rouse Stead Wodehouse b. Dover, Kent, 1 February 1846 [registered Louisa Maria Rouse, but often known as Louise] d. Penkridge, Southern Rhodesia, 18 January 1917 She grew up in England, in Kent and Sussex, becoming governess to a family in Lyminge, Kent, before emigrating to America, c. 1871. While living in Cincinnati, Ohio, she attended a camp meeting in Urbana, Ohio, and wrote her first hymn, ‘Precious Saviour, thou hast saved me’, which was published in Winnowed Hymns, 1873, with music by Dora Boole. In September 1873 she married George Stead, of Hempstead, Long Island, at St Paul Methodist Episcopal Church, Cincinnati, and moved to Hempstead. Her verses, ‘Saved from the power and the bondage of sin’ were published in The Advocate of Christian Holiness, August 1875. She was apparently in England from April to July 1876, with their infant daughter, Louise, when her husband drowned in Hempstead Bay in May 1876, while saving the life of his little boy (a son from his previous marriage). In 1880, she was still living in Hempstead with Louise (aged 5), but shortly afterwards went to South Africa, where she married Robert Wodehouse in Port Elizabeth in January 1882. Her best known-hymn, ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus’, with music by William J. Kirkpatrick, was published in Songs of Triumph, 1882. They served as missionaries in Africa for about 15 years, before returning to Long Island, USA, where he was pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at East Meadow for several years. They returned to Africa in January 1901, to work in Umtali, Rhodesia. After retiring in 1911, she lived near Mutambara mission station, fifty miles from Umtali. Her daughter Louise (sometimes known as Lillie), followed her mother to Africa, where she married the Rev. David A. Carson, and was able to care for her mother in her later years. William J. Kirkpatrick

1838 - 1921 Person Name: William J. Kirkpatrick (1838-1921) Scripture: Psalm 31:14 Composer of "[Oh, cuán dulce es fiar en Cristo]" in Himnario Adventista del Séptimo Día William J. Kirkpatrick (b. Duncannon, PA, 1838; d. Philadelphia, PA, 1921) received his musical training from his father and several other private teachers. A carpenter by trade, he engaged in the furniture business from 1862 to 1878. He left that profession to dedicate his life to music, serving as music director at Grace Methodist Church in Philadelphia. Kirkpatrick compiled some one hundred gospel song collections; his first, Devotional Melodies (1859), was published when he was only twenty-one years old. Many of these collections were first published by the John Hood Company and later by Kirkpatrick's own Praise Publishing Company, both in Philadelphia. Bert Polman

Peter Abelard

1079 - 1142 Person Name: Peter Abelard (1079-1142) Scripture: Psalm 31 Author of "Alone Thou Goest Forth, O Lord" in Common Praise (1998) Abelard, Peter, born at Pailais, in Brittany, 1079. Designed for the military profession, he followed those of philosophy and theology. His life was one of strange chances and changes, brought about mainly through his love for Heloise, the niece of one Fulbert, a Canon of the Cathedral of Paris, and by his rationalistic views. Although a priest, he married Heloise privately. He was condemned for heresy by the Council of Soissons, 1121, and again by that of Sens, 1140; died at St. Marcel, near Chalons-sur-Saône, April 21, 1142. For a long time, although his poetry had been referred to both by himself and by Heloise, little of any moment was known except the Advent hymn, Mittit ad Virginem, (q.v.). In 1838 Greith published in his Spicihgium Vaticanum, pp. 123-131, six poems which had been discovered in the Vatican. Later on, ninety-seven hymns were found in the Royal Library at Brussels, and pub. in the complete edition of Abelard's works, by Cousin, Petri Abelardi Opp., Paris, 1849. In that work is one of his best-known hymns, Tuba Domini, Paule, maxima (q.v.). Trench in his Sacra Latina Poetry, 1864, gives his Ornarunt terram germina (one of a series of poems on the successive days' work of the Creation), from Du Meril's Poesies Popul.
