Isaiah 9:2-8: The race that long in darkness pined

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 217 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 9:2-8 First Line: The race that long in darkness pined Lyrics: The race that long in darkness pined, have seen a glorious light; The people dwell in day, who dwelt in death’s surrounding night. To hail thy rise, thou better Sun! the gath’ring nations came, Joyous, as when the reapers bear the harvest treasures home. For thou our burden hast remov’d, and quelled th’ oppressor’s sway, Quick as the slaughtered squadrons fell in Midian’s evil day. To us a Child of hope is barn; to us a Son is giv’n; Him shall the tribes of earth obey, him all the hosts of heav’n. His name shall be the Prince of Peace, for evermore adored, The Wonderful, the Counsellor, the great and mighty Lord. His pow’r increasing still shall spread, his reign no end shall know; Justice shall guard his throne above, and peace abound below.

Brightest and Best of the Stars

Author: Reginald Heber Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 909 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 9:2 First Line: Brightest and best of the stars of the morning Lyrics: 1 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, dawn on our darkness and come to our aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. 2 What shall we give him, in costly devotion? Shall we bring incense and offerings divine, gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest or gold from the mine? 3 Vainly we offer each lavish oblation, vainly with gifts would his favor secure; richer by far is the heart’s adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. 4 Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our darkness and come to our aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid! Used With Tune: MORNING STAR

It Came upon the Midnight Clear

Author: Edmund H. Sears, 1810-76 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 863 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 9:4-5 Lyrics: 1 It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, goodwill to all, From heav'n's all-gracious king." The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing. 2 Still through the cloven skies they come With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heav'nly music floats O'er all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hov'ring wing, And ever o'er its babel sounds The blessed angels sing. 3 All you, beneath your heavy load, By care and guilt bent low, Who toil along a dreary way With painful steps and slow: Look up, for golden is the hour, Come swiftly on the wing, The Prince was born to bring you peace; Of Him the angels sing. 4 For lo, the days have come to pass By prophets seen of old, When down into the circling years Came Christ as was foretold. His word of peace shall to the earth God's ancient promise bring, And all who take this gift will hear The song the angels sing. Topics: Society Used With Tune: CAROL

O little town of Bethlehem

Author: Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) Appears in 833 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 9:2 Lyrics: 1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see you lie! Above your deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet, in your dark streets shining the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in you tonight. 2 O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth and praises sing to God the King, and peace to all on earth. For Christ is born of Mary; and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. 3 How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming: but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Used With Tune: FOREST GREEN

Hymn 13

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 9:2 First Line: The lands that long in darkness lay Lyrics: The lands that long in darkness lay Now have beheld a heav'nly light; Nations that sat in death's cold shade Are blessed with beams divinely bright. The virgin's promised Son is born, Behold th' expected child appear: What shall his names or titles be? "The Wonderful, the Counsellor." [This infant is the mighty God, Come to be suckled and adored; Th' eternal Father, Prince of Peace, The Son of David, and his Lord.] The government of earth and seas Upon his shoulders shall be laid; His wide dominions still increase, And honors to his name be paid. Jesus, the holy child, shall sit High on his father David's throne; Shall crush his foes beneath his feet, And reign to ages yet unknown.
