Hark! A Thrilling Voice Is Sounding

Meter: Appears in 105 hymnals Scripture: Romans 13:12 Lyrics: 1 Hark! A thrilling voice is sounding! "Christ is near," we hear it say. "Cast away the works of darkness, all you children of the day!" 2 Startled at the solemn warning, from the darkness we arise; Christ, our sun, all ill dispelling, shines upon the morning skies. 3 See, the Lamb so long expected comes with pardon down from heaven. Let us haste, with tears of sorrow, one and all, to be forgiven; 4 so when next he comes in glory and the world is wrapped in fear, he will shield us with his mercy and with words of love draw near. 5 Honor, glory, might, dominion to the Father and the Son, with the ever-living Spirit while eternal ages run. Topics: Doxologies; Return of Christ; New Creation; Light; Lamb of God; Doxologies; Advent; Advent; Return of Christ; Trinity Used With Tune: MERTON Text Sources: Latin, c. 6th cent.; tr. Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying

Author: Philipp Nicolai; Catherine Winkworth Meter: Irregular Appears in 201 hymnals Scripture: Romans 13:11-12 Lyrics: 1. Wake, awake, for night is flying; the watchmen on the heights are crying: Awake, Jerusalem, at last! Midnight hears the welcome voices and at the thrilling cry rejoices; come forth, ye virgins, night is past; the Bridegroom comes, awake; your lamps with gladness take: Alleluia! And for his marriage feast prepare, for ye must go and meet him there. 2. Zion hears the watchmen singing, and all her heart with joy is springing; she wakes, she rises from her gloom; for her Lord comes down all-glorious, the strong in grace, in truth victorious. Her Star is risen; her Light is come. Ah come, thou blessed One, God's own beloved Son: Alleluia! We follow till the halls we see where thou hast bid us sup with thee. 3. Now let all the heavens adore thee, and saints and angels sing before thee, with harp and cymbal's clearest tone; of one pearl each shining portal, where we are with the choir immortal of angels round thy dazzling throne; nor eye hath seen, nor ear hath yet attained to hear what there is ours; but we rejoice and sing to thee our hymn of joy eternally. Topics: Triumph; Judgment; Christian Year Advent; Adoration and Praise; New Heaven and a New Earth Return and Reign of the Lord; Christ's Gracious Life Promised Coming; Zeal Used With Tune: WACHET AUF

'Thy kingdom come!'– on bended knee

Author: Frederick Lucian Hosmer (1840-1929) Meter: Appears in 94 hymnals Scripture: Romans 13:11 Lyrics: 1 'Thy kingdom come!'--on bended knee the passing ages pray; and faithful souls have yearned to see on earth that kingdom's day. 2 But the slow watches of the night not less to God belong; and for the everlasting right the silent stars are strong. 3 And lo, already on the hills the flags of dawn appear; gird up your loins, ye prophet souls, proclaim the day is near: 4 The day in whose clear-shining light all wrong shall stand revealed, when justice shall be throned with might, and every heart be healed: 5 When knowledge, hand in hand with peace, shall walk the earth abroad, the day of perfect righteousness, the promised day of God. My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less

Author: Edward Mote, 1797-1874 Meter: with refrain Appears in 992 hymnals Scripture: Romans 13:14 Lyrics: 1 My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. Refrain: On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand: all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand. 2 When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; in every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. [Refrain] 3 His oath, his covenant, his blood, support me in the whelming flood; when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. [Refrain] 4 When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found: dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. [Refrain] Topics: Promise & Hope Used With Tune: SOLID ROCK

The Day Thou Gavest

Author: John Ellerton, 1826-93 Meter: Appears in 239 hymnals Scripture: Romans 13:11-12 First Line: The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended Lyrics: 1 The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended, The darkness falls at Thy behest; To Thee our morning hymns ascended, Thy praise shall hallow now our rest. 2 We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping While earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world her watch is keeping, And never rests by day or night. 3 As o’er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day, The voice of prayer is never silent, Nor dies the strain of praise away. 4 The sun, that bids us rest, is waking Thy children under western skies, And hour by hour, as day is breaking, Fresh hymns of thankful praise arise. 5 So be it, Lord! Thy throne shall never, Like earth’s proud empires, pass away; Thy kingdom stands and grows forever, Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway. Topics: Evening; Church (General); Missions Used With Tune: ST. CLEMENT

God is Working His Purpose Out

Author: Arthur Campbell Ainger Meter: Irregular Appears in 83 hymnals Scripture: Romans 13:11 Lyrics: 1 God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year: God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near; nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 From utmost east to utmost west, where human feet have trod, by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God: "Give ear to me, you continents, ye isles, give ear to me," that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 3 March we forth in the strength of God, with the banner of Christ unfurled, that the light of the glorious gospel of truth may shine throughout the world: fight we the fight with sorrow and sin to set their captives free, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 4 All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed; vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed; yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.
