All Depends On Our Possessing

Author: Catherine Winkworth Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #280 (1930) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Hymnal Title: American Lutheran Hymnal Lyrics: 1 All depends on our possessing God's abundant grace and blessing; Earthly treasures quickly wane. He whose hope on God is founded Has a wealth of joy unbounded, And His heart will firm remain. 2 He Who hitherto has fed me And to verdant pastures led me Is and ever shall be mine; He whose love has wisely schooled me, And whose hand has gently ruled me, Will not leave me now to pine. 3 Many spend their lives in fretting Over trifles, or regretting Things not destined to remain; I shall strive to win a treasure That will bring me lasting pleasure And a joy that ne'er shall wane. 4 Well He knows what best to grant me, Things that pain or that enchant me; All events must have their day. What to do I may not tell Him, Nor to grant my wish compel Him; When He speaks, I will obey. 5 If on earth my days He lengthen, He my weary soul will strengthen In the years that now look dim; Earthly things are ever going, Like a river onward flowing; But I rest in peace on Him. All things hang on our possessing

Author: Anon. Hymnal: Chorale Book for England, The #130 (1863) Hymnal Title: Chorale Book for England, The Lyrics: All things hang on our possessing God's free love and grace and blessing, Though all earthly wealth depart; He who God for his hath taken, 'Mid the changing world unshaken Keeps a free heroic heart. He who hitherto hath fed me, And to many a joy hath led me, Is and shall be ever mine; He who did so gently school me, He who still doth guide and rule me, Will not leave me now to pine. Shall I weary me with fretting O'er vain trifles, and regretting Things that never can remain? I will strive but that to win me That can shed true rest within me, Rest the world must seek in vain. When my heart with longing sickens, Hope again my courage quickens, For my wish shall be fulfill'd, If it please His love most tender; Life and soul I all surrender Unto Him on whom I build. Well He knows how best to grant me All the longing hopes that haunt me; All things have their proper day; I would dictate to Him never, As God wills so be it ever, When He wills I will obey. If on earth He bids me linger, He will guide me with His finger Through the years that now took dim; All that earth has fleets and changes As a river onward ranges, But I rest in peace on Him. They who trust with faith unshaken In their God are not forsaken And e'er keep a dauntless heart. 2 He who to this day has fed me And to many joys has led me Is and ever shall be mine. He who ever gently schools me, He who daily guides and rules me, Will remain my help divine. 3 Many spend their lives in fretting Over trifles and in getting Things that have no solid ground. I shall strive to win a treasure That will bring me lasting pleasure And that now is seldom found. 4 Well he knows what best to grant me; All the longing hopes that haunt me, Joy and sorrow, have their day. I shall doubt his wisdom never-- As God wills, so be it ever -- I to him commit my way. 5 If on earth my days he lengthen, He my weary soul will strengthen; All my trust in him I place. Earthly wealth is not abiding, Like a stream away is gliding; Safe I anchor in his grace. Topics: Trust; Trust Languages: English Tune Title: ALLES IST AN GOTTES SEGEN
