26. I am Waiting

1 I am waiting, only waiting,
For the dawning of the day;
For the fair and radiant morning,
When life’s shadows pass away;
Then the pearly gates will open,
Then will cease this mortal strife.
Passing to the blessed harbor,
Through the sunset gates of life.

2 I am waiting, only waiting,
For God’s myst’ries to unfold;
For the faith whose fiery trials
Is more precious far than gold;
Waiting still to pray and labor,
Shunning neither toil nor pain,
Looking to the bright hereafter
For the recompense of pain.

3 I am waiting, only waiting,
For the almond tree is white,
And the dark’ning of the windows
Plainly shows me it is night;
Waiting only till the pitcher
Of the fountain head is bruised;
Till the golden bowl is broken,
And the silver cord is loosed.
