42. Ply the Oar

1 On the sunny banks of Canaan, just beyond the bounds of time,
There’s a bright and happy home for you and me;
There the clouds can never enter, for the sun will ever shine—
‘Tis a land so full of joy and liberty.

Refrain:
Don’t you hear the music ringing in that home beyond the sea?
Cheer up, comrades, tho’ the breakers roar!
We will soon be safely landed ‘mid the joyous and the free,
Take courage! God is with us!
Ply the oar!

2 We may meet with stormy breakers ere we reach the heav’nly home,
We may sail on troubled waters all the way;
But our Pilot will be with us, guide us o’er the raging foam,
Land us safely in the harbor some sweet day. [Refrain]

3 Let us cheer up one another, drown the tempest with our song!
Pour the oil of joy upon the ocean foam;
It will smooth the roughest billows, quell the tumult of the throng,
Lighten labor as we journey to our home. [Refrain]
