Notes: There are two refrains that interweave throughout Ps. 107. In the first refrain, these have been put into musical counterpoint (top and middle voices), along with the concluding verse (bottom voice). Any of these voice parts can be taken alone, or they can be put together in any permutation. The congregation could focus on the bottom part, with solo voices interweaving the top and bottom parts. Take care in singing the D-natural in the penultimate measure. It is a “blue note” that is cast against the D-sharp in the accompaniment. The alternate refrain supplies two stanza possibilities. It is possible to choose either stanza as a consistent refrain, or to alternate between the two. This Afro-American spiritual should be sung slowly, feeling the inner pulses. When the psalm text is spoken, the harmony of the refrain may be hummed under the reading.
