O little town of Bethlehem

Author: Phillips Brooks, 1835-1893 Hymnal: Common Praise #63b (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Hymnal Title: Common Praise Lyrics: 1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by: yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 2 O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. For Christ is born of Mary; and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. 3 How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! so God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming; but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in: be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. All beautiful the march of days

Author: Frances Whitmarsh Wile, 1878-1939 Hymnal: The Book of Praise #809 (1997) Hymnal Title: The Book of Praise Lyrics: 1 All beautiful the march of days, as seasons come and go; the hand that shaped the rose hath wrought the crystal of the snow, hath sent the hoary frost of heaven, the flowing waters sealed, and laid a silent loveliness on hill and wood and field. 2 O’er white expanses sparkling pure the radiant morns unfold; the solemn splendours of the night burn brightly through the cold; life mounts in every throbbing vein, love deepens round the hearth, and clearer sounds the angel hymn, good will to all on earth. 3 O thou from whose unfathomed law the year in beauty flows, thyself the vision passing by in crystal and in rose; day unto day doth utter speech, and night to night proclaim in ever-changing words of light the wonder of thy name. Topics: Christmas; Old and New Year; Rural Life / Rogation Sunday Scripture: Psalm 19:2 Languages: English Tune Title: CHRISTMAS CAROL
