Representative Text

1 Beyond the ills and toils of life,
Beyond our human quest,
Beyond the stress of sin and strife,
There rise the hills of rest.
Beyond the azure’s fainting rim,
Beyond, where man is blest,
Beyond the things of time so dim,
There rise the hills of rest.

Refrain:
O land of luster bright,
Dear land of holy light!
We long to reach that country blest,
Those verdant hills of rest.

2 We pray their sunlit heights to climb
Where sin cannot molest,
Where vernal slopes are drest sublime,
Where rise the hills of rest.
There in the flow’r-clad land of light,
With joy and peace possest,
Where faith is lost in bliss of sight,
There lie the hills of rest. [Refrain]

3 The day of time is almost gone,
Its sun is in the west,
Its golden sky bids me go on
To happy hills of rest
I pray, I long, I hope, I wait
With fitting earnest zest,
The day that opens wide the gate
To blissful scenes of rest [Refrain]
