Gustav Palmqvist

1812 - 1867 Person Name: G. Palmqvist Author of "Hellig Aand, du Due" in Evangeli harpe Palmqvist, Gustaf. (Solberga, Sweden, May 26, 1812--September 18, 1867, Stockholm). Baptist. School teacher and organist in Gustavsberg and Stockholm. From 1851 to 1857 was in the U.S. and served Baptist churches in Rock Island and Chicago, Illinois. Upon return to Sweden conducted special Bible courses for the training of preachers. With his brother, Per, compiled a hymnal, Pilgrims-Sånger, 1859 and 1862. Some of the hymns were originals and many were translations of English songs by Palmqvist. Author of "Jag har en vän, så huld, så mild, så tålig" (I Have a Friend, So Patient, Kind, Forbearing). --J. Carolina Sandell

1823 - 1903 Person Name: Lina Sandell Author of "Jesus, lifvets källa" in Lutherförbundets Sångbok Caroline W. Sandell Berg (b. Froderyd, Sweden, 1832; d. Stockholm, Sweden, 1903), is better known as Lina Sandell, the "Fanny Crosby of Sweden." "Lina" Wilhelmina Sandell Berg was the daughter of a Lutheran pastor to whom she was very close; she wrote hymns partly to cope with the fact that she witnessed his tragic death by drowning. Many of her 650 hymns were used in the revival services of Carl O. Rosenius, and a number of them gained popularity particularly because of the musical settings written by gospel singer Oskar Ahnfelt. Jenny Lind, the famous Swedish soprano, underwrote the cost of publishing a collection of Ahnfelt's music, Andeliga Sänger (1850), which consisted mainly of Berg's hymn texts. Bert Polman

Elisabeth Ehrenborg-Posse

1818 - 1880 Person Name: Betty Ehrenborg Author of "Här en källa rinner" in De Ungas Sångbok Posse, Catharina Elizabeth Ehrenborg. (Råbäck, Sweden, July 22, 1818--July 22, 1880). Lutheran. Inherited her mother's interest in literature and began writing poetry at an early age. Became active in Sunday School work. Studied at a seminary in England for six months. Upon return to Sweden became director of a teacher training school associated with the deaconess organization. With this closed, she began her own school. Married A.J. Posse in 1856 and assisted him in the publication of a newspaper, Wäktaren (The Watchman). Had a deep interest in the Christian education of children and wrote and translated many hymns and songs for schools. Translated several English songs which appeared under the title Andeliga sånger för barn (Spiritual Songs for Children). Two more editions appeared later. Pilgrims-Sånger included some of her works. Author of "Så älskade Gud värlen all" (For God So Loved the World). Adapter of "När juldags morgon glimmar" (When Christmas Morn Is Breaking). --J.
