Brian A. Wren

b. 1936 Person Name: Brian Wren Hymnal Title: Chalice Hymnal Author of "Her Baby, Newly Breathing" in Chalice Hymnal Brian Wren (b. Romford, Essex, England, 1936) is a major British figure in the revival of contemporary hymn writing. He studied French literature at New College and theology at Mansfield College in Oxford, England. Ordained in 1965, he was pastor of the Congregational Church (now United Reformed) in Hockley and Hawkwell, Essex, from 1965 to 1970. He worked for the British Council of Churches and several other organizations involved in fighting poverty and promoting peace and justice. This work resulted in his writing of Education for Justice (1977) and Patriotism and Peace (1983). With a ministry throughout the English-speaking world, Wren now resides in the United States where he is active as a freelance lecturer, preacher, and full-time hymn writer. His hymn texts are published in Faith Looking Forward (1983), Praising a Mystery (1986), Bring Many Names (1989), New Beginnings (1993), and Faith Renewed: 33 Hymns Reissued and Revised (1995), as well as in many modern hymnals. Moore Hymnal Title: Glory to God Author of "We Wait the Peaceful Kingdom" in Glory to God Kathleen Rae Moore was born in 1951 in Massachusetts and has lived most of her life in Iowa. She is the daughter of a pastor and a college English teacher, from both of whom she received her love of words. She is a United Methodist pastor in the Iowa Annual Conference, ordained elder in 1991. She attended Simpson College and Iowa State University, and graduated from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL in 1988. She studied ecological sciences at Simpson and Iowa State, preparing to teach in outdoor education. She also ran for the state legislature and was involved in politics, until beginning to work for the church in 1979, which led to her listening more closely to God's call to ordained ministry. Kathy wrote her first hymn in 1986 while in seminary and determined to write a hymn for Advent or Christmas each year. This led to a flowering of around 100 hymns in all. She looks forward to finding time in retirement when she hopes to focus on writing. She has always loved preaching, and enjoys being able to put theological messages into the poetry of hymnody. Michael Perry

Beckenham, Kent, England, 1942; d. England, 1996) was headed for a career in the sciences. However, after one year of study in physics at the University of London, he transferred to Oak Hill College to study theology. He also studied at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and received a M.Phil. from the University of Southhampton in 1973. Ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1966, Perry served the parish of St. Helen's in Liverpool as a youth worker and evangelist. From 1972 to 1981 he was the vicar of Bitterne in Southhampton and from 1981 to 1989, rector of Eversley in Hampshire and chaplain at the Police Staff College. He then became vicar of Tonbridge in Kent, where he remained until his death from a brain tumor in 1996. Perry published widely in the areas of Bible study and worship. He edited Jubilate publications such as Hymns far Today's Church (1982), Carols for Today (1986), Come Rejoice! (1989), and Psalms for Today (1990). Composer of the musical drama Coming Home (1987), he also wrote more than two hundred hymns and Bible versifications. Bert Polman
