1 O stand up like a hero
And fight for the cause we love;
The trumpet calls to battle,
And god watches from above;
Lift high the banner of the cross,
It never knows defeat;
Regard no foe and fear no loss
Till triumph is complete;
March on behind our mighty Lord,
With joy obey his ev’ry word.
For the cause of God we ever fight,
For this is the cause of right.

2 March on, march on to vict’ry!
WE follow the Lord of light;
A mighty host is with us,
To vanquish the hosts of night;
We march to battle with a song,
A joyful band are we;
‘Tis faith that makes our courage strong,
‘Tis faith that makes us free;
‘Tis by our faith in God we win,
‘Tis by our faith we conquer sin.
For the cause of God we ever fight,
For this is the cause of right.

3 Go forward like a hero,
And pray as we onward go;
Each fight will mean a vict’ry,
Each sin we shall overthrow;
We make to God a solemn vow,
To do and dare and die,
If die we must to conquer now,
And on his grace rely;
Then forward go and toil and fight,
Brave soldier, forward into light.
For the cause of God we ever fight,
For this is the cause of right.

Rv William Clark Martin USA 1864-1914. Born at Hightstown, NJ, he graduated from the Peddie Institute in Hightstown in 1884, and in 1891 from the Crozer Theological Seminary, Upland, PA. He became minister of the Grace Baptist Church, Camden, NJ,(1891-1894); Noank Baptist Church, Noank, CT (1894-1900); Tabernacle Baptist Church, New Albany, IN (1902-1904); First Baptist Church, Seymour, IN (1902-1904); First Baptist Church, Bluffton, IN (1904-1909); Grace Baptist Church, Somerville, MA (1909-1912); and First Baptist Church, Fort Myers, FL (1912-1914). In 1891 he married Euretta (Etta) May Wilcox, and they had at least three children (no names found). He penned many hymn lyrics.
