O God, Hear My Prayer; Let My Cry Come to You

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. Meter: 11.8.11.8 D Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 O God, hear my prayer; let my cry come to you, and turn not your face from my need. My days fade like smoke, all my bones burn like coals, my heart has dried up like a reed. I moan like an owl or a lone rooftop bird, while enemies taunt night and day. Because of your anger, my bread tastes like ash, while life wanes and withers away. 2 Yet you are the true God whose throne will endure, whose ways are both righteous and just. Restore now the city your servants hold dear, who cherish its stones and its dust. Of old you have pitied the prisoners' groans, freed those under sentence of death. Once more for your glory reveal your great might, and we shall sing praise with each breath. 3 My strength fades and fails in the midst of my days, my life-span feels suddenly brief. To you, ageless God, will I make my appeal; preserve me and grant me relief. You still will remain when the works of your hands are shrugged off like clothing out-worn. May praise from the people who honor your name continue through ages unborn. His Voice, as the Sound of the Dulcimer Sweet

Author: Joseph Swain Appears in 10 hymnals Matching Instances: 3 Lyrics: 1. His voice, as the sound of the dulcimer sweet, is heard through the shadows of death; The cedars of Lebanon bow at His feet, the air is perfumed with His breath. His lips as the fountain of righteousness flow, that waters the garden of grace, From which their salvation the Gentiles shall know, and bask in the smiles of His face. 2. O! Thou in whose presence my soul takes delight, on whom in affliction I call; My comfort by day, and my song in the night, my hope, my salvation, my all— Where dost Thou at noontide resort with Thy sheep, to feed on the pastures of love? Say, why in the valley of death should I weep, or ’lone in the wilderness rove? 3. O! why should I wander an alien from thee, and cry in the desert for bread? Thy foes will rejoice when my sorrows they see, and smile at the tears I have shed. Ye daughters of Zion, declare, have you seen the star that on Israel shone? Say if in your tents my belovèd hath been, and where, with His flock, is He gone? 4. What is thy belovèd, thou dignified fair? What excellent beauties hath He? His charms and perfections be pleased to declare, that we may embrace Him with thee. This is my belovèd, His form is divine; His vestments shed odor around; The locks on His head are as grapes on the vine, when autumn with plenty is crowned. 5. The roses of Sharon, the lilies that grow in the vales, on the banks of the streams On His cheeks in the beauty of excellence blow; His eyes are as quivers of beams. His voice as the sound of the dulcimer sweet is heard through the shadows of death; The cedars of Lebanon bow at His feet, the air is perfumed with His breath. Used With Tune: SAMANTHRA Text Sources: Apparently an adaptation of "O Thou in Whose Presence."

Isaiah the Prophet Has Written of Old

Author: Joy F. Patterson, 1931- Meter: 11.8.11.8 D Appears in 14 hymnals Matching Instances: 9 Lyrics: 1 Isaiah the prophet has written of old how God's new creation shall come. Instead of the thorn tree, the fir tree shall grow; the wolf shall lie down with the lamb. The mountains and hills shall break forth into song, the peoples be led forth in peace, for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the seas. 2 Yet nations still prey on the meek of the world, and conflict turns parent from child. Your people despoil all the sweetness of earth, the brier and the thorn tree grow wild. God, bring to fruition your will for the earth, that no one shall hurt or destroy, when wisdom and justice shall reign in the land and your people shall go forth in joy. Scripture: Isaiah 55:12-13 Used With Tune: SAMANTHRA
