1 There’s a call for soldiers on the field of battle,
There’s a fight to win o’er Satan’s host arrayed;
Then gird your armor on,
Go forth to right the wrong,
Be not afraid, for Jesus leads the way.

See the hosts of sin advancing,
Satan is leading on,
Then on for Jesus! on for Jesus!
Ever singing the victor’s song.
Then gird your armor on, go forth to right the wrong,
Be not dismayed, though fierce the conflict be;
Then on to victory!
Then on to victory!
“For Jesus only” let the watchword be.

There is earnest need for workers true and brave;
Tho’ fierce the conflict be,
Tho’ strong the foemen be,
Press firmly on, the cause of Christ to save.

See the hosts of sin advancing,
Satan is leading on,
Then on for Jesus! on for Jesus!

Then gird your armor on, go forth to right the wrong,
Be not dismayed, though fierce the conflict be;
Then on to victory!
Then on to victory!

3 Behold! our Captain leadeth on to victory,
And Satan’s horde is scattered far and near;
Then shout the battle-cry,
With banners waving high,
The God of battle leads us, do not fear.

See the hosts of sin retreating,
Satan is leading on,
Then on for Jesus! on for Jesus!
Ever singing the victor’s song.

Be not dismayed, though fierce the conflict be;

He collaberated with William J Kirkpatrick, also of Philadelphia, promoting gospel songs. He helped compile “Songs of love and praise #4”, then later “Songs of love and praise #5”.
