Psalm 114

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 49 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 114 First Line: When Isr'el, freed from Pharaoh's hand Lyrics: When Isr'el, freed from Pharaoh's hand, Left the proud tyrant and his land, The tribes with cheerful homage own Their King, and Judah was his throne. Across the deep their journey lay; The deep divides to make them way; Jordan beheld their march, and fled With backward current to his head. The mountains shook like frighted sheep, Like lambs the little hillocks leap; Not Sinai on her base could stand, Conscious of sovereign power at hand. What power could make the deep divide? Make Jordan backward roll his tide? Why did ye leap, ye little hills? And whence the fright that Sinai feels? Let every mountain, every flood, Retire and know th' approaching God, The King of Isr'el: see him here; Tremble, thou earth, adore and fear. He thunders, and all nature mourns; The rock to standing pools he turns; Flints spring with fountains at his word, And fires and seas confess the Lord. When Isr'l, by the Almighty led

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 114 Lyrics: 1 When Isr'el, by th' Almighty led, (Enrich'd with their Oppressor's Spoil) From Egypt march'd, and Jacob's Seed From Bondage in a foreign Soil; 2 Jehovah, for his Residence, Chose out Imperial Judah's Tent, His Mansion Royal, and from thense Thro' Is'rel's Camp his Orders sent. 3 The distant Sea with Terror saw, And from th' Almighty's Presence fled; Old Jordan's Streams surpriz'd with Awe, Retreated to their Fountain's Head. 4 The taller Mountains skipp'd like Rams, When Danger near the Fold they hear; The Hills skipp'd after them like Lambs, Affrighted by their Leader's Fear. 5 O Sea, what made your Tide withdraw, And naked leave your oozy Bed? Why Jordan, against nature's Law, Recoild'st thou to thy Fountain's Head? 6 Why Mountains did ye skip like Rams, When Danger does approach the Fold? why after you the Hills like Lambs, When they their Leader's Flight behold? 7 Earth tremble on; well may'st thou fear Thy Lord and Maker's Face to see: When Jacob's awful God draws near, 'Tis time for Earth and Seas to flee. 8 To flee from God, who Nature's Law Confirms and cancels at his Will; Who Springs from flinty Rocks can draw, And thirsty Vales with Water fill.

Glorious things of thee are spoken

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,287 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 114:8 Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode. On the Rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may'st smile at all thy foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage: grace which, like the Lord the giver, never fails from age to age? *3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night and shade by day; daily on the manna feeding which he gives them when they pray. 4 Saviour, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the worldling's pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure, none but Zion's children know. Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain

Author: John of Damascus (675?-749?); John Mason Neale (1818-1866) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 379 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 114 Lyrics: 1 Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness; God hath brought his Israel into joy from sadness: loosed from Pharaoh's bitter yoke Jacob's sons and daughters; led them with unmoistened foot through the Red Sea waters. 2 'Tis the spring of souls today: Christ hath burst his prison, and from three days' sleep in death as a sun hath risen. All the winter of our sins, long and dark, is flying from his light, to whom we give laud and praise undying. 3 Now the queen of seasons, bright with the day of splendour, with the royal feast of feasts, comes its joy to render; comes to glad Jerusalem, who with true affection welcomes in unwearied strains Jesus' resurrection. 4 Neither might the gates of death, nor the tomb's dark portal, nor the watchers, nor the seal hold thee as a mortal; but today amidst the twelve thou didst stand, bestowing that thy peace which evermore passeth human knowing. 5 Alleluia now we cry to our King immortal, who triumphant burst the bars of the tomb's dark portal; alleluia, with the Son God the Father praising; alleluia, yet again to the Spirit raising. Topics: Easter (season); Easter Vigil Used With Tune: AVE VIRGO VIRGINUM (GAUDEAMUS PARITER)

When Israel out of Egypt came

Author: C. Wesley Appears in 26 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 114 Lyrics: 1 When Israel out of Egypt came, And left the proud oppressor's land, Supported by the great I AM, Safe in the hollow of his hand, The Lord in Israel reigned alone, And Judah was his favorite throne. 2 The sea beheld his power, and fled, Disparted by the wondrous rod; Jordan ran backward to its head, And Sinai felt th' incumbent God; The mountains skipped like frightened rams, The hills leaped after them as lambs. 3 What ailed thee, O thou trembling sea? What horror turned the river back? Was nature's God displeased with thee? And why should hills or mountains shake? Ye mountains huge, that skipped like rams! Ye hills, that leaped as frightened lambs! 4 Earth, tremble on, with all thy sons, In presence of thy awful Lord, Whose power inverted nature owns, Her only law his sovereign word: He shakes the center with his rod, And heaven bows down to Jacob's God. 5 Creation, varied by his hand, The Omnipotent Jehovah knows; The sea is turned to solid land, The rock into a fountain flows: And all things, as they change, proclaim The Lord eternally the same.
