Amazing Grace

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807; John Rees, fl. 1859 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,414 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5:2-17 First Line: Amazing grace! How sweet the sound Lyrics: 1 Amazing grace! how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. 2 ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed! 3 The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures. 4 Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. 5 When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’d first begun. Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,217 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5:5 Lyrics: 1 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all Thy quickening powers; Kindle a flame of sacred love In these cold hearts of ours. 2 In vain we tune our formal songs, In vain we strive to rise; Hosannas languish on our tongues, And our devotion dies. 3 Dear Lord, and shall we ever live At this poor dying rate? Our love so faint, so cold to Thee, And Thine to us so great! 4 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all Thy quickening powers; Come, shed abroad a Savior’s love, And that shall kindle ours. Spirit of God, Who Dwells within My Heart

Author: George Croly Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 340 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5:5 Lyrics: 1 Spirit of God, who dwells within my heart, wean it from sin, through all its pulses move. Stoop to my weakness, mighty as you are, and make me love you as I ought to love. 2 I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay, no angel visitant, no opening skies; but take the dimness of my soul away. 3 Did you not bid us love you, God and King, love you with all our heart and strength and mind? I see the cross– there teach my heart to cling. O let me seek you and O let me find! 4 Teach me to feel that you are always nigh; teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; teach me the patience of unceasing prayer. 5 Teach me to love you as your angels love, one holy passion filling all my frame: the fullness of the heaven-descended Dove; my heart an altar, and your love the flame. Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,730 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5:1 Lyrics: 1 Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace! 2 My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honors of your name. 3 The name of Jesus charms our fears and bids our sorrows cease; 'tis music in the sinner's ears, 'tis life and health and peace. 4 He breaks the power of canceled sin, he sets the prisoner free; his blood can make the foulest clean; his blood avails for me. 5 He speaks, and, listening to his voice, new life the dead receive; the mournful, broken hearts rejoice; the humble poor believe. 6 Hear him, you deaf; you voiceless ones, your loosened tongues employ; you blind, behold your Savior come; and leap, you lame, for joy! 7 To God all glory, praise, and love be now and ever given by saints below and saints above, the church in earth and heaven. Come Down, O Love Divine!

Author: Richard F. Littledale Meter: 6.6.11.6.6.11 Appears in 109 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5:5 First Line: Come down, O Love divine Lyrics: 1 Come down, O love divine! Seek out this soul of mine and visit it with your own ardor glowing: O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing. 2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let your glorious light shine ever on my sight, and make my pathway clear, by your illuming. 3 Let holy charity my outward vesture be, and lowliness become my inner clothing; true lowliness of heart which takes the humbler part, and for its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4 And so the yearning strong with which the soul will long shall far surpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace till we become the place in which the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Salvation unto Us has Come

Author: Paul Speratus Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 20 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5 Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor; Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in His Law demand And none to Him could render Caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand For man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not those pure desires The spirit of the Law requires, And lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream That God His Law had given That sinners could themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain, Sin held its sway unceasing; The task was useless and in vain, Our guilt was e'er increasing. None can remove sin's poisoned dart Or purify our guileful heart-- So deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the Law must be fulfilled Or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God's anger stilled, Our human nature sharing. He hath for us the Law obeyed And thus His Father's vengeance stayed Which over us impended. 6 Since Christ has full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation. Thy grace alone, dear Lord, I plead, Thy death is now my life indeed, For Thou have paid my ransom. 7 Let me not doubt, but trust in Thee, Thy Word cannot be broken: Thy call rings out, "Come unto Me!" No falsehood hast Thou spoken. Baptized into Thy precious name, My faith cannot be put to shame, And I shall never perish. 8 The Law reveals the guilt of sin And makes us conscience-stricken; The Gospel then doth enter in The sinful soul to quicken. Come to the cross, trust Christ, and live; The Law no peace can ever give, No comfort and no blessing. 9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone And rests in Him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. For faith alone doth justify; Works serve thy neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living. 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by His grace-- All glory to His merit! O Triune God in heaven above, Who has revealed Thy saving love; Thy blessed name be hallowed. Amen. Topics: Faith and Justification Used With Tune: ES IST DAS HEIL Text Sources: Tr. composite

My Faith Looks Up to Thee

Author: Ray Palmer Meter: 6.6.4.6.6.6.4 Appears in 2,198 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5:1-2 Lyrics: 1 My faith looks up to thee, thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior divine! Now hear me while I pray; take all my guilt away; O let me from this day be wholly thine! 2 May thy rich grace impart strength to my fainting heart, my zeal inspire; as thou hast died for me, O may my love to thee pure, warm, and changeless be, a living fire! 3 While life's dark maze I tread and griefs around me spread, be thou my guide; bid darkness turn to day; wipe sorrow's tears away; nor let me ever stray from thee aside. 4 When ends life's transient dream, when death's cold, sullen stream shall o'er me roll; blest Savior, then, in love, fear and distrust remove; O bear me safe above, a ransomed soul!
