Representative Text

1 A little soldier of the King
His birthday holds today,
May he be ever good and true,
And God’s commands obey.

Refrain:
Happy birthday, happy birthday,
More like Jesus may you grow,
Happy birthday, happy birthday,
Love and serve Him here below.

2 A little soldier of the King
Must stand up for the right.
And try to do thro’ all the year
Things pleasing in His sight. [Refrain]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
