John Edmund Barss was born in Wolfville, Nova Scotia on June 21, 1871. He graduated from Acadia College in Wolfville with a B.A. in 1891. He received a second B.A. from Harvard in 1892 and an M.A. from Harvard in 1893. He taught for a year at Roxbury Latin School in Boston, then at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, and at Loomis School in Windsor Connectictut.
