1 As I travel on the trail that is leading to the vale
Where the dark, and silent river flows along.
on the ever-changing miles I am thankful for the smiles
Of the friends who fill my heart with cheerful song.

Refrain:
O "what a Friend we have in Jesus,"
He died because He is our Friend;
he walks along the trial [sic] beside us;
In love He'll guide us to the end.

2 When the sky seems overcast, and when sorrow holds me fast,
when this world would hide from sight the treasured goal.
Just a word from friendly hearts courage now to me imparts,
And the joy of heaven fills my troubled soul. [Refrain]

3 As we journey on the trail, may we never, never fail
to be friendly to the pilgrims that we meet,
Giving help where need may call, like the greatest Friend of all,
leads us to the land where friendships are complete. [Refrain]

Benard Bates Edmiaston Born: July 16, 1881, Bennetts, Baxter County, Arkansas. Died: December 2, 1964, Bronte, Texas. Buried: Fairview Cemetery, Bronte, Texas. Bernard was the son of David W. Edmiaston and Georgia Ann Fluty, and husband of Ella Allen. He studied music under Rufus Turner, Franklin Eiland, W. H. Lawson, Berry McGee, Emmett Dean, G. W. Fields, John Herbert, and many others, and taught singing schools for at least 38 years.
