1 Bells of gladness sweetly chime,
To greet the happy summer time,
O’er the meadows gay
Peals forth each tuneful lay.
Skies of blue look down and smile,
Your merry tones our hearts beguile,
Ringing swinging clear, with music full of cheer.

Refrain:
Welcome strains in happy measure,
Ev’ry note of love we treasure,
Praising Him for summer’s pleasure,
Bells of gladness chime.

2 Through the days that come and go,
To worship call the world below,
For the sunshine’s god,
And joys that all may hold.
Swell the song of Jubilee
O’er verdant plain and rolling sea,
All the joyful notes prolong of summer’s song. [Refrain]

3 Bells of gladness sweetly ring,
While praiseful thoughts to us you bring,
Telling of His care,
Whose love we freely share;
Festal chimes enfold the day
Whose shining hours soon pass away,
Thankful hearts with new delight in praise unite. [Refrain]

Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
