Be Not Afraid

Representative Text

1. Darkness lies on Galilee
Where our Lord's disciples sail,
When the Master's form they see
And their hearts within them fail.
But across the windswept night
Comes a message sweetly said,
Stilling all their sudden fright,
"It is I, be not afraid."

2. When thick darkness shrouds our path,
Sight can pierce no space around,
Unknown terrors shake our faith
And our foothold seems unsound,
There is death and danger near,
Still close by our Lord brings aid,
Saying, "Child, be of good cheer,
It is I, be not afraid."

3. In that night when yawns the grave
Just before our trembling feet,
May the promises he gave
Be a recollection sweet;
Tho' each instinct thrills with fear,
May our faith on him be stayed,
When his loving voice we hear,
"It is I, be not afraid."

4. When that day dawns bright and clear
On a longing, waiting world,
When our Master shall appear
And his banner be unfurled.
May we rise in newer life,
At his feet our burdens laid,
When his voice shall still our strife,
"It is I, be not afraid."
