1 Don’t give up when your way is dreary,
Trust in the Lord, and wait for the day;
He’ll not leave you alone in darkness,
But will brighten all your way.

Christ the Lord is still your Friend;
Look to Him in the time of trouble,
He will keep you to the end.

2 Don’t give up when your cares are heavy;
Cast them in prayer and faith on the Lord;
He has promised He will sustain you,
And He’s faithful to His word. [Refrain]

3 Don’t give up when your toil seems fruitless;
God hath declared again and again
That the labor of all the faithful
Shall not, shall not be in vain. [Refrain]

4 Don’t give up when you weakly stumble,
Tell it to Him, He’ll help you to stand;
Trust Him daily to travel with you
Till you reach the better land. [Refrain]

Rufus H. McDaniel was ordained in the Christian church in 1873. He found much joy in church music. He began writing hymns in the 1880's. He wrote, "I feel in my soul that God has something for me to do in brightening the experience of struggling souls. My chief desire is to be a blessing, if possible, to my fellow-men through these hymns and thereby glorify God in the name of his dear son 'whose I am and whom I serve.'"
