Archibald Fowler Bennet was born March 17, 1896 in Dingle, Idaho, but he spent his boyhood in Taber, Alberta. He attended Normal College in Calgary and taught school from 1915 until he enlisted in the Canadian army in 1916 and served in France during World War I until 1919. He resumed teaching in Alberta, then moved with his wife to Salk Lake City in 1921 where he attended the University of Utah where he received a bachelor's degree and a master's in history and political science. He became interested in genealogy as a teenager and published articles in the Genealogical Society of Utah's quarterly, and soon was appointed librarian for the society, a position he held for more than 30 years.
