Representative Text

1 From the merry Christmas time,
Faintly echoes now the chime;
Softly sing the lovely lays,
Of her gladsome holidays.
Now thro' crystal skies I hear,
Sounding sweetly, sounding clear,
Whispering 'neath the stars of night,
Singing in the morning light,
Notes from harp-strings newly strung,
Tunes and accents fresh and young.
Tell me, what is this I hear?
The happy, happy glad New-Year!

2 Stealing off at twilight gray,
Flies the old swift year away;
With her weight of weal or woe,
Let her thro' night's portals go.
As the hastens onward, cry
Parting year! good bye! good bye!
Brought she joy, or brought she pain,
She may ne'er come back again.
Turn we flow from her away,
Turn, we where, with carols gay,
Lightly dancing draweth near,
The happy, happy glad New-Year!

3 Through the golden gate of day,
Comes she gaily on her way.
See how bright each icy gem,
Sparkles in her diadem!
Sing, oh pines, old ocean chant,
Mountain winds blow jubilant;
Let glad voices carol out,
Join in one exultant shout.
Ring, ye bells, your sweetest chime;
Crown with joy the merry time;
For advancing, now draws near,
The happy, happy glad New-Year!
