Wiseman, Cardinal Nicholas Patrick Stephen, son of James Wiseman, merchant at "Waterford and Seville, was born at Seville, Spain, Aug. 2, 1802, educated at Ushaw College, Durham, and at the English College in Rome; ordained priest at Rome in 1825, and became in 1827 Rector of the English College. In 1840 he was consecrated at Rome as Bp. of Melipotamus in partibus, and returned to England as Vicar-Apostolic of the Midlands, being summoned in 1850 by Pope Pius IX. to Rome, made a Cardinal and created Archbishop of Westminster. He died in London, Feb. 15, 1865. His hymns include:— 1. England! Oh, what means this sighing?
