Notes

Great God, to Thee our songs we raise. [Resignation.] Appeared anonymously in the Foundling Collection,1796, and subsequent editions, in 3 stanzas of 6 lines. In 1810 it was transferred, with slight alterations, to the Rev. J. Kempthorne's Select Portion of Psalms & Hymns, No. 132, and from thence it has passed into a few modern collections. In the Irish Church Hymnal, 1873, the text is altered somewhat freely. In D. Sedgwick's marked copy of Kempthorne's Psalms & Hymns, 1810, the authorship is ascribed to Kempthorne, but without authority. In common with other hymns of high merit, which come to us from the Foundling Collection, its authorship is unknown. [William T. Brooke]
