1 Happy children gather’d here,
Raise an old-time carol dear;
Let your jubilate ring;
Echoed down thro’ stirring times,
pealing out from silv’ry chimes,
Mem’ries fond its measures bring.
Countless voices of the past wake to life once more,
In a chorus grand and sweet chant it o’er and o’er
Till the chords like billows roll,
Surging on from soul to soul
Like a heav’nly clarion hear it resounding on.
O come, all ye faithful, joyful, and triumphant;
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold Him born the King of angels;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

2 Ev’ry tongue its strains employ;
All the world replies with joy,
Swells the mighty glad refrain;
From the lands of sunny skies
Its triumphant notes arise,
Send the message forth again.
Sounding o’er the frosty plains and the snow-crown’d hills,
How the lov’d, familiar air ev’ry bosom thrills,
While anew its music calls
And its glorious theme enthralls
As a thronging host again lifts the anthem loud.
Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above;
Glory to God in the highest;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

3 Ring it out, ye merry bells;
Ev’ry note in gladness tells
Of the Christmas story blest;
To its melody now sway;
Willing hands your changes play
In the hymns they love the best.
In your tuneful harmony all our hearts unite;
Come, the angel’s song repeat of the Holy Night,
Telling of a Saviour’s birth
And their “Peace, good-will to earth;”
With its wondrous melody all the world arouse.
Yes, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be glory giv’n;
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Hyde, Abby Bradley, was born at Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Sept. 28, 1799, and married to the Rev. Lavius Hyde, of Salisbury, Mass., Sept. 28, 1818. She died at Andover, April 7, 1872. Her first poem, an Address to Mr. Wolfe, the Jewish missionary, appeared in a New Haven paper in 1822 or 1823, and from it Dr. L. Bacon (q.v.) took two hymns for his Hymns & Sacred Songs for the Monthly Concert, Andover, 1823. Those hymns have merit, but are not now in common use. Asahel Nettleton included 9 pieces by her in his Village Hymns, 1824, and 34 more were given in the revised and enlarged edition of the same, 1851. An additional hymn appeared in Nason's Congregational Hymn Book, 1857. Of those hymns the following are still in common use:—… Go to person page >
