Representative Text

1 He trieth the righteous, as Daniel of old,
And midst all the trials He bids us be bold;
He chasteneth those whom He loveth, He says,
And He’s promised to love us throughout all our days.

Refrain:
He trieth the righteous, His word tells me so;
He trieth the righteous, it must be, ’tis so;
He trieth the righteous, the story is old,
If Thou art trying me Father,
I’ll try to come out all pure gold.

2 He trieth the righteous, in furnaces hot,
And bids us walk thro’ them, our faith failing not;
The flames will not hurt us, on Him we rely,
The dross He’ll consume and the gold purify. [Refrain]

3 He trieth the righteous with sickness and pain,
He makes us to suffer again and again;
But if in our suffering we cling to Him still,
We can bear it with patience, because ’tis His will. [Refrain]

4 O Judge of the righteous, help us to be strong,
To love Thee and serve Thee, yes, all the day long;
And when tribulations come ’round us, just say:
He trieth the righteous, I’m glad He tries me. [Refrain]
