Representative Text

1 Hearts of clay awake! awake!
O'er the hills the morn doth break;
See the day is coming on!
Lo! before it night is flown,
Lo! before it night is flown!

2 Deepest darkness disappears
As the gleaming sunlight cheers;
Laughing in its victory;
Sleeping world, awake and see!
Sleeping world, awake and see!

3 Look! the clouds and floating mist
Would the coming day resist!
They their weakness see the more,
As the sun displays his pow'r;
As the sun displays his pow'r.

4 Creeps the wild beast to his lair!
Leaps the mocking bird in air;
Evil doers seek their den;
Sing the righteous sons of men;
Sing the righteous sons of men.

5 Dancing satyrs hide in caves,
Living plants spring from their graves;
Evil spirits cringe in fear,
Newborn ones God's grace declare;
Newborn ones God's grace declare.

6 See! the sunlight-bursting o'er,
Painting glory on the shore!
Comes the Sun of Righteousness,
Bringing everlasting peace!
Bringing everlasting peace!
