Representative Text

1 How peaceful is the grave!
Where, life's vain tumult past,
Th' appointed house, by Heaven's decree,
Receives us all at last.

2 There earthly troubles cease,
There passions rage no more,
And there the weary pilgrim rests
From all the toils he bore.

3 There all, both small and great,
Partake the same repose;
And there in peace the ashes mix
Of those who once were foes.

4 All, by the hand of death,
Partake a common tomb;
Yet saints shall not forever sleep
Not theirs the sinner's doom.
