Representative Text

1 I am thinking today of the scenes of my youth,
And the days that have long passed and gone;
Of the time when I played ‘round my dear mother’s knee,
When she sang me her lullaby song.

Refrain:
No! the days will ne’er return, when I was a boy,
The hopes of my youth fade away;
I am journ’ying along to the land of the blest,
Where the scenes of my youth ne’er decay.

2 The old house, crib and barn, are replaced by a new,
And the homestead seems strange to me now;
But my tho’ts wander back to my dear mother’s side,
Where in childhood she oft kissed my brow. [Refrain]

3 Yes, I’m gliding adown the silent stream of time,
And the ev’ning of life is at hand;
And their shadows seem to meet and gather at my feet,
Like the shells ‘mid the bright drifting sand. [Refrain]
