Representative Text

1 I wander back in memory to childhood’s happy days,
And view once more the scenes of yore, and sing my childhood lays.
I stand beside the old armchair and view God’s Book divine;
These treasures all today recall that mother o’ mine.

Refrain:
Jest to look into your eyes and see their love-light shine,
Just to feel your hand once more in loving clasp with mine,
Just to hear your voice in prayer with pleadings most divine,
Oh, that would be such joy for me,
Mother o’ mine.

2 I see her as with loving smile she toiled form morn till night,
With cheerful heart to do her part to make my life more bright,
And as the day draws to its clods, the sun’s last beams decline,
‘Twas then I heard her read God’s word, that mother o’ mine. [Refrain]

3 About the fireside then we knelt in silence and she prayed,
Her pleadings brief bro’t sweet relief as at that throne we stayed,
So tenderly God’s grace she sought with faith almost divine,
She doubted not, but asked and got—that mother o’ mine. [Refrain]

4 But many years have passed and gone since by her side I knelt,
As kneeling there in childhood’s prayer her gentle touch I felt;
But oh, what longing fills my heart, what joys shall once day shine,
At Jesus’ feet once more I’ll meet that mother o’ mine. [Refrain]

Tullar's mother died when he was just two years old so Grant had no settled home life until he became an adult. Yet from a life of sorrow and hardship he went on to bring joy to millions of Americans with his songs and poetry. As a child, he received virtually no education or religious training. He worked in a woolen mill and as a shoe clerk. The last Methodist camp meeting in Bolton was in 1847. Tullar became a Methodist at age 19 at a camp meeting near Wat… Go to person page >
