In him my star, my sun

Representative Text

1 I was walking in darkness of midnight,
Where the blossoms of hope never bloom
And before me no light cheered the darkness,
Of the still deeper shade of the tomb.
When I cried in my anguish of spirit,
For a path for my homeless feet,
Lo! a ray shone before, o'er the mountains,
With a radiance, O, so sweet!

Refrain:
'Twas the lamp of the Word,
Lighted up by the Lord,
To the pathway it guided my feet.

2 How I toiled on my upward journey,
For the mountain was steep and high;
But the Lamp showed the pitfalls around me,
And toward it I turned my eye.
Still the heaven was dark above me,
And my heart it was sad and lone;
When I thought, "there is no one who loves me,"
Lo! the Day-star arose and shone!

Refrain:
'Twas the love of my Lord,
And it shone from the Word;
O, what joy, for the darkness had flown!

3 Still the mists of the morn were around me,
And the air it was damp and chill,
And I thought on the warmth of the valley,
As I toiled to climb the hill.
But I said "tho' less bleak, the dark valley,
Yet the shadows of Death o'er it close"
Then the mount took the tints of the morning,
And the glorious sun up rose!

Refrain:
Bright and warm is my way,
In the light of the day
And my heart with its radiance glows.

4 Now the bright, blessed sunshine is o'er me,
And the light and the warmth lie so sweet
On the path, straight and narrow, before me,
Where I follow the print of his feet.
And the tokens, my hopes raise and strengthen,
That his exiles shall soon cease to roam
For the rock shadows darken and lengthen
When the Eventide falls, he will come.

Refrain:
O, the rest will be sweet
To the toil worn feet,
In the joy of the Father's home!
