Hymnary Friends,

Please pardon this brief interruption, and please consider a gift today to support the work of Hymnary.org. Here's why.

Each month half a million people visit this website for free access to the most complete database of North American hymnody on the planet. But this project does not come without a cost, and we have limited sources of revenue. Twice a year we hold a fund drive, and these drives are critical to our future.

So if you benefit from Hymnary.org, would you consider a donation today? Even small amounts help, and they also let us know you're behind us and support what we do.

Click the Donate button below to be taken to a secure giving site. Or you can make your tax-deductible contribution by sending a check to Hymnary.org at 3201 Burton SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.

On behalf of the entire Hymnary.org team, our thanks.

Representative Text

1 Jeg raaber til dig, o Herre Christ!
Jeg beder, du hører min Klage,
Giv mig den rette Tro forvist,
At jeg dig ikke forsager,
At jeg fortror mig ganske til dig
Og til din store naade
I al Vaade;
Styrk mig i din Sandhed
Og altid vel bevare!

2 Jeg beder nu mer, o Herre Gud!
Du kom mig det vel give:
At jeg skulde ikke blive til Spot,
Som mine Fiender drive;
Thi giv du mig et stadigt Haab,
Lær mig mit Kors at bære,
Taalig være
I al den Sorrig og Nød,
Som mig kan vederfare!

3 Und mig og det, af Hjertens Grund,
Jeg kunde min Fiende tilgive
Og elske hannem i allenstund
Og i din Frygt saa blive,
At jeg maattee vorde dig saa lig
Og elske mine Uvenner
Og bekjende
Dig, Fader i Himmerig,
Nu og foruden al Ende!

4 Lad ingen Modgang, Lyst eller Nød
Saa st"rk mig komme tilhænde,
Hvad heller jeg skal leve elle dO,
At de mig fra dig vende;
Lad ingen Ting være mig saa kjær,
Der mig skal fra dig drage
alle min Dage;
Af alt det, i Verden er,
Du skal mig ene behage!

5 Jeg ligger her i aandelig Strid,
Mig Djævelen gjør stor Vaande
Og gjær dertil sin største Flid
At komme mig tilhaande;
thi hjælp og styrk min Skrøbelighed,
Ellers saa maa jeg falde
Nu med Alle;
Skriften siger: du er tro,
Thi ville du mig husvale!

Speratus, Paulus, D.D., was born in Swabia, Dec. 13, 1484. In a poem, written circa 1516, on Dr. J. Eck, he calls himself Elephangius, i.e. of Ellwangen; and in his correspondence, preserved at Königsberg, he often styles himself "a Rutilis" or "von Rötlen." These facts would seem to indicate that he was born at the castle of Röthlen, near Ellwangen. This property belonged to the Probst of the ecclesiastical corporation at Ellwangen, and Speratus's father was probably their bailiff or agent. The family name seems to have been Hoffer or Offer, and to have been in later years, following a practice common in the 16th cent., Latinized by himself into Speratus. He is probably the "Paul Offer de Ellwangen," who matri¬culated at the Universit… Go to person page >
