Representative Text

1 Kneeling by my trundle bed,
Mother’s hand upon my head,
She would kiss my cheek and say,
“Heav’n is not far away.”
Many years have rolled between,
Mother’s feet have entered in,
Still that whisper when I pray,
“Heav’n is not far away.”
Still that whisper when I pray,
“Heav’n is not far away.”

2 Darkness comes with guilty fears,
Sin and shame bring bitter tears,
Praying there, night turns to day;—
“Heav’n is not far away.”
Holy now, my Bethel ground,
Angle hosts encamped around,
In my dreams I hear them say,
“Heav’n is not far away.”
In my dreams I hear them say,
“Heav’n is not far away.”

3 When at last ‘mid shadows deep,
I shall “lay me down to sleep,”
He who keeps my soul will say,
“Heav’n is not far away.”
Then how sweet will be my bliss;
Dearer than a mother’s kiss—
On His breast my head to day,
“Heav’n is not far away.”
On His breast my head to day,
“Heav’n is not far away.”
