Representative Text

1 Let me live in a house by the side of the road,
Where the race of men go by,
The men who are good, and the men who are bad,
Just as good and as bad as I;
I would not sit in the scorner’s seat
Or hurt the cynic’s ban;
Let me live in a house by the side of the road,
And be a friend to man.

Refrain:
For Jesus Himself lived upon the road
Where men were passing along;
And His great tender heart, and His mighty arm
Were ready to bless the throng.

2 I see from my house on the side of the road,
By the side of the highway of life;
The men who press on with the ardor of hope,
The men who are faint with strife;
But I turn not away from their smiles nor tears,
Both parts of an infinite plan;
Let me live in a house by the side of the road,
And be a friend to man. [Refrain]

3 Let me live in a house by the side of the road,
Where my brother passes by,
Let me tell him of Christ who has love of his life,
Left His throne on the cross to die;
If he feels in his heart he would like to be good,
I’ll show him how he can;
Let me live in a house by the side of the road,
And be a friend to man. [Refrain]
