He Shall Sustain Thee

Representative Text

1 Life may have trial, and sorrow and care,
Burdens too great for thy spirit to bear,
But the sweet promise of Jesus is thine,
“He shall sustain thee,” with power divine.

Refrain:
“He shall sustain thee, He shall sustain thee,”
Jesus, the Saviour, will all thy sorrow share;
“He shall sustain thee, He shall sustain thee,
He shall sustain thee,” O Child of His care.

2 Fear not the subtle temptations that roll
Like angry ocean-waves over thy soul;
He who spake peace to wild Galilee’s wave,
“He shall sustain thee,” the “Mighty to save!” [Refrain]

3 Earth-friends may cheer with their fellowship sweet,
Making life’s pathway with gladness replete,
But there’s a Friend that is dearer than all,
“He shall sustain thee,” nor suffer thy fall. [Refrain]

4 When the long shadows foretoken the night,
Lo, in life’s eventide all shall be light!
Praise His dear name with thy last fleeting breath,
“He shall sustain thee,” in life and in death. [Refrain]
