1 Mig tjener alle Ting til Gavn,
Naar jeg kun frygter Herrens Navn,
Det Onde virker mig til Godt,
til evig Ære Verdens Spot,
Af Verdens Galde kan jeg faa
En Himmel-Flod og Glædes Aa.

2 Den Sten, man kaster mig i Vei,
Gaar jeg omkring og agter ei,
Hvert Rænkespind og Snæregarn
Gjør Gud til spindelvæv og Skarn;
Des mer min Uven gjør mig Harm,
Des mer jeg kryber Gud i Barm.

3 Hvad Armod, Svaghed, daglig Brøst
Gud sender mig, saa er min Trøst:
Han veed, hvad bdst mig tjene kan,
Brød eller Nød, Vin eller Vand;
Jeg faar, hvad han mig tjenlight ser,
Hvad vil jeg da i Verden mer?

4 Og om jeg ei mit Ønske naar
I samme time, Dag og Aar,
Som Hjertet daarlig siger til,
Og efter Kjødets Tanke vil,
Guds Himmel-Seierværk ei staar,
Udi hans Tid min Tarv jeg faar.

5 Saa frygt din Gud af Hjertens Grund,
O, kjære Sjæl, lad Haand og Mund
Og Hjerte følges altid ad,
Vær til Guds Gjerning frisk og glad;
Frygt Gud, og vid, at al Ting maa
Til Salighed dig virke paa!

In his youth, Kingo wrote a series of poems picturing humorous scenes in village life and a pastoral love poem, Chrysillis. He studied theology at the University of Copenhagen, graduating in 1654, and for some time acted as private tutor. In 1661 he was appointed vicar to the pastor at Kirke Helsinge, and in 1668 he was ordained a minister at his native town, where his poetic activity began.
