Representative Text

1 Night of nights! when the bells of Heaven
Sweetly rang thro’ the midnight air;
When the beautiful white-robed angels
Sang for joy in the skies so fair.

Refrain:
Night of nights thro’ holy portals
Comes again the chant sublime,
"Welcome now for the royal Stranger;
Greet your Lord this Christmas time!"
O night of nights! O night divine!

2 Floating down in a sea of glory,
Telling unto the shepherds true:
"Lo! this day in a lowly manger
Christ the Savior is born to you." [Refrain]

3 Night of nights! still the strains exultant
Thrill our souls with their notes sublime;
Still to those who with joy receive Him,
Jesus comes at the Christmas time. [Refrain]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
