O store Gud, vi love dig, Vi sige tak evindelig

Representative Text

1 O store Gud, vi love dig,
Vi sige Tak evindelig!
Al Verden sander det og veed,
At du er End af Evighed.

2 Al Engles Hob og Himlens Hær,
Lov, Tak og Pris for Thronen bær,
Og Sangen af Serafer gaar
Saa langt, som himlens Hvælving naar:

3 "Du hellig, hellig, hellig er,
Gud Zebaot, vor Herre kjær,
Og fund er Himlen al og Jord
Udaf din Guddoms Ære stor!"

4 Profeter og Apostle glad
Og dine Vidner, Rad paa Rad,
De staa for dig i Livsens Sal
Med Takkefang i Tusindtal.

5 Din Kirstenhed paa denne Jord
Bekjender dig og paa dig tror
Som Faderen af Evighed,
Hvis Magt ei Maal og Ende veed.

6 Og Sønnen, den erbaarne, som
Fra dig til Verdens Frelse kom,
Samt Heligaand, vor Trøster sand,
Høilovet over alle land.

7 O Kriste, Ærens Konge prud,
Du er Guds Søn og evig Gud,
Stor Kjærlighed dig til os drog,
Du os at frelse Manddom tog.

8 Den haarde Dødens Braad du brød
Og vandt os Livet ved din Dod.
Dig binder ikke Dødens Baand,
Du sidder hos Guds høire Haand.

9 Gjenkommer med Guds Vælde stor,
At holde Dommedag paa Jord.
Thi hjælp os nu, vær deres Trøst,
Som du saa dyre har forløst!

10 Reed os et Rum i himmerig
Blandt dem, som samlet er hos dig!
Dit Folk til Hjælp, o Kristus, kom,
Velsign din Arv og Ejendom!

11 Opløft os, led os, vis os Vei,
Til evig Tid forlad os ei!
Vi flokkes glade i din Favn,
Hver Dag velsigne vi dit Navn.

12 Tag os, trofaste Gud, i Agt,
Lad ingen Synd i os faa Magt!
O vær os naadig, Herre Gud,
Vær naadig alt til Enden ud!

13 Gud være os miskundelig,
Som vi og haabet har paa dig!
Vi tror derpaa og trøstes ved,
Vi rokkes ei i Evighed.

Author (attributed to): St. Ambrose

Ambrose (b. Treves, Germany, 340; d. Milan, Italy, 397), one of the great Latin church fathers, is remembered best for his preaching, his struggle against the Arian heresy, and his introduction of metrical and antiphonal singing into the Western church. Ambrose was trained in legal studies and distinguished himself in a civic career, becoming a consul in Northern Italy. When the bishop of Milan, an Arian, died in 374, the people demanded that Ambrose, who was not ordained or even baptized, become the bishop. He was promptly baptized and ordained, and he remained bishop of Milan until his death. Ambrose successfully resisted the Arian heresy and the attempts of the Roman emperors to dominate the church.
