The Discontented Seeds

Representative Text

1 Once five tiny, little seeds,
In a small brown pod,
Felt a strong desire to know
Of the world abroad;
They were crowded very close,
And they couldn't see at all,
They could only feel along
By their narrow wall.

Chorus:
Little seeds in a pod,
Very dignified, and quaint, and odd.
But a lesson should be found,
And be scatter'd all abroad,
From the discontented seeds
In a small brown pod.

2 They had heard the whisp'ring winds
Tell of flow'rs and birds,
And they felt a discontent
Quite too deep for words;
They declared that they were tired
Of a place so strange and odd,
And they wished they could get out
Of that horrid pod. [Chorus]

3 And one tiny, little seed,
Said he'd like to grow;
But he really couldn't now,
He was shut in so.
And each discontented seed,
Gave a vicious little nod,
And they rattled very loud
In the small brown pod. [Chorus]

4 Then a sudden little "pop,"
Sounded loud and clear,
And a ray of light shone in--
And the seeds felt queer,
When the five all tumbled out
On a bed of soft green sod,
While above them, all curled up,
Swung the small brown pod. [Chorus]

5 When the autumn came again
With its red and gold,
When the corn was almost ripe,
And the flow'rs were old,
You'd have seen, if you had walked
By that self-same bed of sod,
Full of dozen pods instead
Of that small brown pod. [Chorus]
