Representative Text

1 Over a city shineth at night
Marvelous whiteness, wondrously bright!
Never such starlight glittered before;—
See how it hovers over yon door!

Refrain:
Star of fulfillment! beautiful star!
Lighting the manger seem from afar,
Beacon from heaven; Sign of the King,
Light out of darkness, earthward you bring.

2 Not o’er a palace, shineth this light;
Not o’er a temple, fair to the sight.
No; this bright beacon shineth so fair,
Over a stable,—low in the air. [Refrain]

3 Over a stable? how can it be!
Go with the shepherds, hasten and see!
Enter the stable, bend and adore
Jesus the Infant,—King evermore! [Refrain]
