1 Sover I, hvor kan I sove,
O I Sjæle-Vægtere!
Hvor er eders Tro og Love?
Sover I dog aller Tre!
Er det Tid at sove nu,
Da Guds Søn i Sjæl og Hu
Ængstes hart og skjælver bange
Som en ussel Dødsens Fange?

2 Kan I ei een Tinte vaage,
Siger Jesus, er det ret,
At den Trygheds Søvne-Taage
Blinder Sjæl og Øie tæt?
Lukker I da Hjertet til,
Og med Søvnet slukke vil
Al den Angest, Nød og Møie,
Som jeg maa ufkyldig døie?

4 Peder, løfterige Peder!
Hvor er nu dit Ord og Haand!
Sover du, imens jeg svedet,
Ængstet udi Sjæl og Aand?
Satan vilde sigtet dig,
Da jeg bad saa inderlig;
Der du var i Havsens Fare,
Holdt jeg Pagt, dit Liv at vare.

5 O, min Jesus, o jeg klager
Og bejamrer hjertelig,
At mig Sikkerhed indtager
Og saa tidt forblinder mig,
At, om jeg end en Gang faar
Tanker om dit blod og Saar,
Saa gjør Satan, naar det gjælder,
At mig Søvnen overvælder.

6 Trende Gange du kun minder,
At Disciplene skal se,
Jeg ti tusind Gange finder
Din Advarsel mer end de,
Ligger dog saa lad og blind,
Sovner dybt i Synden ind,
Vil ei vaage, se og høre,
Naar Guds Aand vil Hjertet røre.

7 Væk mig dog, og lad mig ikke
Lukt i Døden sove hen!
Løs du op min Trygheds Strikke,
Søde Jesus Sjæleven!
Lad mig Øie altid se
Paa din Pine, õd og Ve,
Lad mig midt i Dødsens Taage
Paa dig tænke, tro og vaage!

In 1661 he was appointed vicar to the pastor at Kirke Helsinge, and in 1668 he was ordained a minister at his native town, where his poetic activity began.
