Representative Text

1 Swell the chorus glad and sweet,
Vale and hill the song repeat,
Sunbeams shining, flowers twining,
Making life a joy complete.
Nature’s voices gaily ring,
All creation praise doth sing,
Light and gladness banish sadness,
Christ is King.

Refrain:
Hail Him! Hail Him!
Christ our King,
Thro’ life’s happy golden hours,
Glad with sunshine, bright with flow’rs;
Come rejoicing, praises voicing,
Christ is King.

2 Skies of blue are bright and clear,
Happy hearts are full of cheer,
Lofty mountain, sea and fountain,
Tell of One forever dear;
Float from bush and waving tree,
Bird-notes full of melody,
Songs resounding, love abounding,
Full and free. [Refrain]

3 Swell the chorus loud and strong,
Thor’ the summer aisles along,
Service royal, hearts so loyal,
Unto God our Lord below;
Life is full of joy today,
Untold gladness fills the way,
Children singing, praises ringing,
This bright day. [Refrain]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
