Arvine, Kazlitt. (Centreville, Alleghany County, NY, December 18, 1819--July 15, 1851, Worcester, Massachusetts). Baptist. Name was originally Silas Whellock Palmer but was changed by an act of the Massachusetts legislature. Graduated from Wesleyan University, 1841, and Newton Theological Institution, 1845. Author of several works, including Cyclopaedia of Moral and Religious Anecdotes, Cyclopaedia of Anecdotes of Literature and the Fine Arts, and a volume of poetry. For his ordination in 1845, John G. Whittier wrote a seven-stanza hymn which begins: A strength thy service cannot tire, A faith which doubt can never dim, A heart of love, a lip of fire, O Freedom's God! be thou to him.
